Fascia Repair Before the New Gutter Goes Up
When water has been overflowing the back of a gutter for years, the wood fascia behind it goes soft. You can't hang a new gutter from rotted fascia — the screws won't bite, the run won't stay up, and within a season you're back where you started. Fascia repair has to come first.
We cut out the soft sections, splice in new wood (matched in dimension and species to the existing fascia), prime, paint, and re-mount the gutter into solid material. Most homes need 2–8 feet of fascia replacement; severe cases can run more. We quote it as part of the gutter job so you know the all-in cost up front.
Cut out the rot. Splice in fresh wood. Prime, paint, and hang the new gutter into solid material.
How fascia repair runs as part of a gutter project:
- Identify during measure — During the gutter estimate we tap the fascia, look for water staining, and identify any sections that need replacement.
- Quote upfront — Fascia repair is itemized in the gutter quote — linear feet of replacement, materials, paint. No surprise charges on install day.
- Cut + splice on install day — Soft sections cut back to solid wood, new fascia spliced in with proper joints, fastened to the rafter tails.
- Prime + paint — New wood primed and painted to match the existing fascia color before the gutter goes up.
- Hang the gutter — Gutter mounted into solid material with hidden hangers every 24 inches. Holds for the life of the system.
Most gutter contractors won't touch fascia repair — they'll install the new gutter into whatever's there and pretend it'll hold. We won't. If your fascia is soft, you need it repaired before the new gutter goes up, and we handle it as part of the same visit.

12 Feet of Fascia Replaced in Corrales
A Corrales homeowner had a back-side gutter that had been overflowing for years. Behind it, 12 linear feet of fascia had gone soft. We cut it back, spliced in new wood, painted, and re-hung the gutter — all on the same visit.
How we handled it
- Cut back: Removed the failing gutter, cut the soft fascia back to solid wood on both sides — 12 linear feet total.
- Splice + fasten: New 1x8 cedar spliced in with proper bevel joints, fastened to the rafter tails with stainless screws.
- Prime + paint: Sealed the new wood with primer, painted to match the existing fascia color.
- Re-hang: New seamless gutter hung into the fresh fascia with hidden hangers every 24 inches.

Water had been pooling against our slab for years. Juan rerouted both downspouts, added extensions, and the back wall has been dry through two monsoon seasons. Smart, careful work.

Fascia Repair FAQs
-
Common signs: visible water staining behind the gutter, paint peeling on the fascia, soft spots when you press the wood, gutter that's pulled away from the fascia, or visible rot at the corners. We'll tap-test it during the estimate.
-
Pricing is per linear foot of replacement, plus paint and labor. Typical repairs run $15–$30 per linear foot, depending on access, material, and how much demolition is involved. Quoted as part of the gutter project.
-
Yes — but it's more efficient to do them together. We have to remove the gutter to access the fascia anyway, and re-hanging an old leaking gutter on fresh fascia is rarely worth it.
-
Standard pine or cedar matched to your existing fascia. Cedar holds up better in NM sun. Both are primed and painted before the gutter goes back up.
-
Once primed and painted to match, the splice is barely noticeable. New paint may be slightly fresher-looking than the old fascia for the first season, but it weathers in.
