Downspouts — Routed Where the Water Should Go

Half the gutter problems we see are actually downspout problems. Downspouts that dump straight onto the slab. Downspouts that splash water against the stucco. Downspouts that aren't sized big enough for the roof they're draining. Most foundation, stucco, and landscaping damage in NM is downspouts doing the wrong thing.

We install new downspouts, replace damaged ones, add extensions, route water underground when it makes sense, and add splash blocks where it doesn't. The goal is the same on every job: get the water at least 4 feet away from the foundation, ideally further on properties where erosion is already a problem.

Water moves where you tell it to. We tell it to go away from your house.

Downspout work we handle:

  1. New downspout installation — Sized to the roof area they drain — 3x4 for most NM homes, oversized for larger roofs or heavy monsoon properties.
  2. Replacement of damaged downspouts — Wind damage, hail dents, separated joints — replaced with matching color and profile.
  3. Extensions to splash blocks — Aluminum extensions get water away from the slab, splash blocks dissipate the flow so it doesn't dig a hole in the dirt.
  4. Underground reroutes — PVC underground from the downspout to the curb, irrigation ditch, or desert landscape — for properties where above-ground extensions don't work.
  5. Color-matched to your trim — Same color options as the gutters. Downspouts blend, not stand out.

Downspout work is unsexy and underestimated. It's also the single biggest factor in whether your foundation, stucco, and landscaping survive monsoon season. We take it seriously, and we route the water where it should go — not just "down."

Why Choose Precision

  • Properly Sized

Downspouts sized to the roof area they drain. Undersized downspouts overflow even when clean.

  • Routed Away

Minimum 4 feet from the foundation. Further on properties with erosion or stucco staining.

  • Above-Ground or Underground

Whichever fits the property. We can run underground PVC out to the irrigation ditch on properties where above-ground extensions don't work.

  • Color-Matched

Same factory-finish colors as our gutters. Blends into the trim rather than drawing the eye.

How it works

Underground Reroute on a Corrales Horse Property

Two downspouts at the back of a Corrales home were dumping into the corral area, creating constant mud. We ran underground PVC from both downspouts out to the existing irrigation ditch.

How we handled it

  • Plan the route: Walked the yard, located the irrigation ditch, planned the trench path around the existing landscape.
  • Dig + run PVC: Trenched 4" PVC from each downspout out to the ditch, with cleanouts at each turn.
  • Cap with grates: Surface drains with grates at each downspout connection so debris can be cleared without digging.
  • Backfill + restore: Trenches backfilled, ground restored to its original look. No visible runs across the yard.

What Rio Rancho & ABQ Say

  • Beautiful, Clean Install

Juan and his crew installed seamless gutters on our whole house in one day. Color matched perfectly, every downspout drains clear, and the cleanup was spotless. Quote was fair and exactly what we paid.

    Lauren P. Rio Rancho, NM
  • Saved Our Foundation

Water had been pooling against our slab for years. Juan rerouted both downspouts, added extensions, and the back wall has been dry through two monsoon seasons. Smart, careful work.

  • Got Us In Before Monsoon

Three other companies couldn't fit us in. Precision had us measured, quoted, and installed in under a week — right before the rains started. Saved my stucco.

    Jenna R. Corrales, NM
  • Will Use Again Without Hesitation

Cleaned out the cottonwood debris from every run, repaired two sagging sections, and added gutter guards. Showed up when he said, charged what he quoted. That's all you can really ask for.

FAQs

Downspout FAQs

  • Minimum 4 feet from the foundation. We recommend 6+ feet on properties with stucco staining or erosion already happening. Underground reroutes can run as far as needed.

  • Standard 3x4 handles most NM homes. Properties with larger roof areas or heavy monsoon runoff benefit from oversized 4x5 downspouts. We size them based on the area they drain.

  • Above-ground extensions and splash blocks: $50–$150 per downspout. Underground PVC reroutes: $300–$800 per downspout depending on length and trench difficulty.

  • Yes — most downspout work is independent of the gutter run. We can replace, reroute, or extend a downspout while leaving the existing gutter in place.

  • It can if you don't have cleanouts. We install cleanouts at every turn so debris can be cleared without digging. Most underground runs go years without needing service.
